Verizon is now offering select customers unlimited data plans to compete with Sprint Nextel Corp.’s popular unlimited plan.
Verizon Wireless (VZ) is offering certain existing customers an unlimited data plan that rivals one from Sprint Nextel Corp. (S). The company’s Verizon Wireless Talk and Text Plus Data promotion offers unlimited text, unlimited data and 450 minutes of talk time for $70, with a one-year contract renewal.
The new plan, which Verizon Wireless said is available only for a limited time, comes on the heels of a similar plan from U.S. Cellular Corp. (USM), and ahead of the competitive holiday shopping season. Family plans start at $140 for the first two lines and cap talk minutes at 1,400. All secondary lines on the Family SharePlan must take the Talk and Data promotion and the offer is not available for family share plans with 700 minutes of talk time. Additional lines start at $20 per month.
Verizon’s plan matches Sprint Nextel on price, but Sprint Nextel offers unlimited talk and unlimited mobile-to-mobile calling, regardless of the network, while VZW’s plan includes unlimited mobile-to-mobile calling only across the Verizon network. U.S. Cellular’s new offering includes unlimited talk but caps data usage at 5 Gigabytes per month.
This is a great alternative to Sprint, but if your organization uses multiple carriers or supports an individually liable wireless program, you may want to reconsider going with Verizon. By offering Verizon network-only mobile-to-mobile calling, you will inevitably need a bigger, more expensive voice plan.
However, what’s even more interesting is the fact that Verizon is only offering this to select customers. We’ve scoured their website, but are unable to find anything referring to this plan.
