Well Hell…Virginians Swear the Most in Service Chats and Calls

Maybe its because our carriers make people very mad in the States but the US is the place where apparently people are more likely to say “F you” than thanks. 🙁

We, of course, know you can go geek out and provide analytics lots of stuff, but on swearing? Only in America.

Quartz analyzed transcripts of 35 millon Customer Service chats that took place in May 2017 and counted up words noted as “curse”. It turns out Virginians are the most obnoxious with swearing in almost 7% of the chat conversations.

Sheesh (yes that was counted as a “curse”(!)); i personally take exception to many of the words deemed “curse”. Verbal categories of curse specific words included the nasty “mofo, poop, arse, and sheesh”. No wonder Virginia was #1: this is a bit of a low — albeit interesting — bar. Men used more specific ugly body part language while women used more “soft” curses like “poop” and “gosh”. Sheesh!

Since we happen to be Headquartered in Richmond Virginia and have been known to unfortunately sling a few curse bombs, this appears on target. But where does your state come in? Check out the above for the most scandalous language according to a Quartz (QZ.com) report.

For the cynic in you, according to Quartz, “there is some hope: In some of the most sweary states, people also mixed in polite words like thanks, kindly, and appreciate. [i wonder if that was a “kindly go F yourself” bless your little heart]. The most polite state, in terms of pleasant words weighed against curses, was Idaho.” and the least polite was Hawaii.

Hopefully we are all swearing happily together (damn right!) because we are still…..

All About You, DH

“All about you DH”…..this is one of my very favorite and most often used expressions — needed to be said in a low voice (like Yogi Bear “Heey Boo Boo” — allaboutyouDH) with the emphais on the DH.

So first, what is DH? Duck Head, of course. Or you can substitute your own D word but Duck is the unofficial term, and i am sticking to it.

Of course you have heard this expression before, but the way it became burned into my mind initiated as a voice mail from my sister. She calls one day and is leaving a voice mail. All of a sudden silence and then…..”all about you DH”. In this case the D was not duck, but we’ll leave it at that.

A moment later she realizes she was still talking on my voice mail and I can hear this register to her with a large silently audible “whoops!” Then….loud guffawing snorting laughter when she realizes what she has just said to me but not directly meant for me (this time anyway).

She laughed for the remainder of the full 2 minute message limit.

The backstory is that she was actually driving while she left this message for me and at that exact moment, a guy had pulled in front of her cutting her off and she responded as any normal driver might except she had an indirect voice mail participant.

It is one of my most favorite phrases because it provides hats off to those who are so tied up in what seems to be their latest narcissistic rage of being “all about yourself”. We try very hard at BP to make our services “all about you — our clients” in the best possible way. But once in awhile everyone needs a little “All about you DH” (if only in our heads) for those are “All About Me”.

We love this expression and hope to give you all a chance to protect yourself from the DH’s of life and to give yourself a moment of humor in dealing with them.

Capabilities are a burden: A Window Washing Case Study

How are your windows? Sparkling? Dirty? Recently I had a conversation about outsourcing services with one of our Clients and he likened our services to getting his windows washed: it was something he could do himself, so why pay anyone else to do for him? Our conversation went something like this……..

Him: Your services are something people think they can do themselves. Just like the windows at my house: my wife and I were talking about having someone wash the windows and I said: why spend the money to do something I can do myself?

Me: How’d that work out for you?

Him: I didn’t pay anyone to wash the windows and they are still dirty.

As with many very capable IT professionals, he is a very bright guy and so are many of our Clients and Prospects. However, as he pointed out, this capability can also interfere with success if you are not able to team with others and multiply efforts. Seriously, being that capable is a burden.

But, this guy is bright enough also to know when to collaborate with partners that can bring something to the table to add value to the process and do it with a measureable ROI – be that time, software or dollars. He can leverage the expertise of others in order to achieve HIS goals.

And together, we have achieved big things with this client; he has partnered with us to save time, money and identify trends with usage that affect his wireless bills. Recently we together were able to identify some potential hardware upgrade issues that were sucking up a bunch of data: he provided root cause potential and we provided backup usage data. Overall efforts resulted in his organization’s bills (including Bill Police cost and all carrier costs) going down about 35% less than before with just carrier cost alone. And he didn’t have to get his hands dirty.

So, next time you look at your windows, think about your capabilities: where is your talent best spent, what others talents are that you can use to achieve multiplicative results and if you want to see out of your windows.
